Literary Analysis
For the character Winston is trying to swim in waters to dangerous for his kind. the deeper he delves into the depths of the secrets of the Party, and Big Brother. With every step he takes he reveals that ignorance is bliss. An example of this would be Winston himself. He would of lived out his life in relative content if he had not seen the picture of the delegates, as they say," The truth is better not known". However he does see it and its significance. As Winston had put it," it was enough to blow the Party to atoms, if in some way it could have been published to the world and its significances made known."(87) This had lead to him doing things that are he wouldn't normally do, things that put attention to him. This had caused him to be captured they the part after he had read the book and had confessed to wanting the destruction for the party. He then was tortured; brainwash and ultimate robbed what little free-will he had. There are a number of things that "if he didn't do" would of saved him, but the in the world of 1984, Ignorance is indeed bliss.
Criticism
One of the major parts of judging a book is to ignore its fame, other people's opinions, and generally any other opinion other than your own. 1984 did not disappoint when done so. It’s filled with suspense, danger, mystery, and the fact that this could happen. However it does not live up to the reviews given to it. I had imagined that it would have constant suspense, not a overly drawn out plotline. I felt the same way when i read Lord of the Rings. It a great book but it could of been majorly shorted and still not lose any meaning or feeling from it. The characterization of Winston is great. He is easily associated with our own lives, and thus makes that much of a bigger impact on us all. Yet again, my like of dystopian stories prevail. It had suited my tastes overall, and if I were to give it a score out of ten it would be a solid 8/10.
