1984 by George Orwell is a widely known science fiction book. 1984 is a book about what life would be like if Europe was controlled by a fascist government. It even was parodied in a 1984 Superbowl commercial that advertised Apple's first Macintosh, which (as we all know) launched the company into success (that and its iPods).

: Imagine living in Europe, except without rights, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, where the government watched over you and listened to everything you said and even thought. Then you have George Orwell's 1984.
Meet the main character, a man named Winston (connection with Winston Churchill?), he lives in this world. He is monitored daily by the government who they all call Big Brother. Then, one day, he meets a woman 20 years younger than him named Julia. Who turns out to secretly be a part of a rebellion against Big Brother. Together they do something that's illegal in the country, they, without government permission, fall in love.

Eric Arthur Blair (a.k.a. George Orwell) was born on the 25th of June in 1903. He played many practical jokes as a kid, he was even expelled out of a school for his prank of sending a town surveyor a dead rat for his birthday present. When Eric Blair grew older he was known to become a heavy smoker. It is said that he even made his own extremely strong cigars which he smoked in hospitals and even when he had bronchitis.
He is best known for his novels 1984, Animal Farm, and Homage to Catalonia. He finished writing 1984 in 1949 (irony!) and it instantly became a wide known book.
He was also a journalist.

1984 is written in third person limited perspective. You can tell by the following passage presented from 1984:"...A young woman leapt out of a doorway, a little ahead of Winston, grabbed up a tiny child playing in a puddle, whipped her apron around it, and leapt back again, all in one movement." (83) You can tell this story is written in third person limited because, Winston is the main character and a narrator is telling what is happening. Also you can tell that it is Limited and not Omniscient, because the narrator only announces Winston's thoughts and not the woman or the child's thoughts.
The genre of 1984 is science fiction, due to the fact that they have police that monitor their thoughts, and due to the fact that the book is about what the author thought 1984 would be like, if the Europe had a fascist government.

The diction in the story is neutral and formal. But back in 1949 these would be thought to be neutral. There are some strange exceptions such as the use of "Newspeak" which is a language that originates out of English that Big Brother created, which in order to fully understand you would need to actually know Newspeak.
The tone of the story is a depressing and without hope kind of tone, because George Orwell wants to tell that Fascism is bad, and by using the tone, he tells you that Fascism will lead to people being depressed and without hope.

I think that 1984 was a really great and original book. First of all, this book is very good at showing the readers what the world of fascism would be like. He also put in small traditions (like the hanging) that helped the reader feel that this world is very real. I also liked the concept of the thought police. It gave you the feel that wherever you went you were never away from Big Brother, showing the true power of Big Brother. So All in all I think this was a good book that has an original concept.
